Houston, TX

Project Engineer / HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Engineer is required to join an established engineering and manufacturing business specialising in custom-designed industrial HVAC systems for offshore, onshore, oil & gas, and mission-critical applications.

Project Engineer / HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the detailed design and engineering of complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, pressurisation, and filtration systems operating in demanding industrial and hazardous environments.

This position goes beyond conventional commercial HVAC design, focusing on highly engineered, custom-fabricated HVAC equipment, packaged systems, and mechanical assemblies designed to meet stringent customer specifications, safety regulations, and international engineering standards.

The position would suit an engineer with experience in industrial HVAC design, custom equipment manufacturing, packaged HVAC systems, or mechanical engineering within an MEP consultancy, EPC contractor, or specialist HVAC manufacturer.

Project Engineer / HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Benefits

  • $100,000–$1450,000 base salary.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Opportunity to engineer specialist HVAC systems for technically challenging industrial applications.
  • Exposure to offshore, onshore, hazardous-area, and mission-critical engineering projects.
  • Collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, and commissioning teams.
  • Travel requirements of up to 10%.

Project Engineer / HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities

  • Design complex industrial HVAC systems, including heating, cooling, ventilation, pressurisation, filtration, and air distribution for offshore and onshore applications.
  • Perform detailed HVAC engineering calculations, including heat loads, cooling and heating requirements, airflow, duct sizing, pressure losses, and noise calculations.
  • Undertake sizing and selection of HVAC components, including compressors, cooling and heating coils, fans, filtration equipment, and associated mechanical accessories.
  • Develop detailed mechanical designs for custom-fabricated HVAC equipment, packaged systems, skids, and industrial mechanical assemblies.
  • Produce conceptual layouts, general arrangement drawings, 3D models, fabrication drawings, and detailed mechanical engineering documentation.
  • Review and interpret engineering proposals, customer specifications, technical requirements, and applicable industry codes to develop compliant HVAC system designs.
  • Design ductwork systems, including routing, airflow distribution, pressure control, and associated mechanical arrangements.
  • Develop HVAC operating sequences and control philosophies, coordinating with electrical designers on power distribution, instrumentation, and PLC-based controls.
  • Perform mechanical calculations for equipment weights, centres of gravity, and structural support requirements for packaged equipment and skids.
  • Work closely with project managers, client engineering teams, vendors, and fabrication personnel to deliver designs within project scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Prepare technical specifications, equipment Bills of Materials, vendor enquiries, and engineering documentation required for procurement and manufacturing.
  • Review engineering drawings and documentation to ensure compliance with customer requirements and applicable engineering standards.
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing, equipment testing, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, evaluating equipment reliability, manufacturability, constructability, and serviceability.
  • Support continuous improvements in HVAC equipment design, product performance, manufacturing efficiency, and engineering processes.

Project Engineer / HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Requirements

  • Engineering degree required, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 4 years' relevant engineering design experience, ideally involving industrial HVAC systems, custom mechanical equipment, or packaged HVAC solutions.
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC system design, including heat load calculations, airflow requirements, ductwork design, and mechanical equipment selection.
  • Experience designing HVAC equipment for industrial, offshore, oil & gas, hazardous, or classified environments.
  • Understanding of direct expansion (DX) and chilled water systems, refrigeration cycles, compressors, fans, coils, and associated HVAC components.
  • Experience developing detailed mechanical drawings, fabrication documentation, and 3D CAD models for custom-engineered equipment.
  • Familiarity with industrial fabrication, packaged equipment design, skid-mounted systems, and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of applicable engineering standards, including ASHRAE, NFPA, ABS, USCG, IMO, SMACNA, NEC, IEC, and ATEX.
  • Understanding of HVAC control systems, industrial electrical requirements, and PLC-based control philosophies.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software, with Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD advantageous.
  • Ability to interpret complex customer specifications and translate technical requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with clients, project engineers, manufacturing teams, and external suppliers.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.
